Pumpkin picking is always a great way to get into the spooky spirit before carving your own creepy creations.

Here are five superb local spots where you can pick up a pumpkin and have some Halloween fun!

Pontac Pumpkins, Longbeck Lane, New Marske

Pontac Farm has always been a popular Pick Your Own Pumpkin spot – with nine varieties of pumpkins growing in its field.

As well as a fantastic selection to choose from, Pontac Farm, you also admire the stunning countryside and coastal views and have fun at selfie stops and fun features at the site.

The opening date has been confirmed as Tuesday, October 17, and you can book your slot to pick out your favourite here

Newham Grange Farm, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough

Enjoy some spooky family fun at Newham Grange Farm this Halloween, including pumpkin picking and carving, arts and crafts, spooky trail and spot prizes for best Halloween outfit.

Little ones can carve their best spooky face in the Discovery Barn – and save taking the mess home – while they can also enjoy spooky arts and crafts and the Halloween Trail too.

There’s lots of photo opportunities around the farm but don’t forget your wellies and waterproofs to enjoy all the usual farm fun too.

Cherry Hill Garden Centre, Stokesley Road, Hemlington, Middlesbrough

Cherry Hill is another great option to pick your very own pumpkin, ready to carve just in time for the most ghoulish day of the year.

In addition to the pumpkin patch, the centre will also host a straw maze and have countless photo opportunities throughout.

Cherry Hill has also announced its spooky Halloween Walk will return for 2023 although is not suitable for under 5s.

The event runs throughout October. Pumpkin prices range from £1 to £10. More details are available here.

Baydale Pumpkins, Conscliffe Road, Darlington

This Darlington farm boasts an impressive selection of 10 different varieties of pumpkins from which to chose.

The farm also runs a special ‘from dusk to darkness’ event where brave souls can grab their torches for a spooky evening of pumpkin picking fun.  Booking is required and tickets cost £5 per car but are redeemable against pumpkins.

Booking is not required for daytime picking. Exact dates for reopening in October are yet to be revealed but you can get more details here

Tweddle Farm, Blackhall Colliery, near Hartlepool

Tweddle Farm is one of our area’s best loved pumpkin patches and is filled with garden games, face painting, funfair rides, photo opportunities.

The patch is bursting with all kinds of shapes, colours and sizes and you can choose your favourite to take home and carve.

Tickets includes farm and pumpkin patch entry.
