World mental health day is an important day to raise awareness of mental health problems. Taking place on 10th October, this year’s theme is ‘mental health is a universal human right’.

We all know good mental health is crucial to our overall health and wellbeing, but knowing how to promote and protect your own can be challenging.

Here are 5 things you can do to improve your mental health and wellbeing, in Tees Valley:

Take a walk

Explore one of the many scenic walks to get some fresh air and enjoy the local nature. Take your pick from a stroll along Marske’s coast, a loop round the riverside, or a wander through Stewart’s Park.

Talk to someone

Whether it’s a friend, family, or a professional, sharing can be tough, but reaching out is the first step and it gets easier with support. Grab a coffee with a friend in one of our local cafes, Off The Ground or Thingy-Ma-Jigs Coffee House, or talk over a bite to eat at Wallis & Co or The Mockingbird Deli

Get some exercise

It doesn’t have to be a marathon. Whether you follow a yoga video in your living room, peddle around one of our picturesque cycle routes, or push yourself out of your comfort zone and surf at Saltburn’s iconic coastline. Moving your body can help.

Take yourself on a day out

In Tees Valley there are a variety of activities on your doorstep. Why not take a wander round Kirkleatham’s Owl Centre or relax and enjoy a film at the cinema. There’s something for everyone.

Exercise your mind

It’s always important to keep your mind active. Explore a world of stories in a bookshop, spend a night at the theatre, or delve into some local and international art exhibitions, all in our own Tees Valley.
